Liminal Horror Monster: The Mnemosyne

Mnemosyne

Shaped as a fleshy hippocampus with multitudes of writhing suckers in a roiling and distended belly. Befouls bodies of water with chemical secretions that smell of adhesives and turpentine where it sleeps and dreams deeply. The creature projects an aura of deep love and compassion through its cyclopean eye luring people to its hiding place through their dreams. Embracing the Mnemosyne through its dozens of writhing mouthed tendrils allows one to enter into a world of nostalgic bliss seeing things as they were or should be while the creature secretly feeds off of their powerful emotions. People that have been fed upon become bonded to the Mnemosyne protecting it at all costs until they have been fed upon enough to be sublimated into the pool becoming nothing more than a liquified husk. Those who aren’t consumed are given purpose and the will to make their world in the dream a reality. The most faithful and devoted servants of the Mnemosyne are even given a semblance of the creature’s ability to walk through dreams and influence others thereby creating cults hidden amongst the populace sworn to gather sacrifices while they remain in the grip of nostalgic ambition.

Adventure Hooks:

  • A small town fallen on hard times causes a community leader to seek solace in the embrace of the Mnemosyne using their status to stealthily cultivate a stable of new victims from the “do-nothings” and “degenerates” that they believe were behind the town’s fall to begin with.
  • Missing persons cases have skyrocketed on the edge of town with no leads as to the whereabouts of the missing and no reason to suspect foul play. To make matter’s worse, the missing people in question have been sighted in and around a nearby lake but no contact has been made with them or their families.
  • A once troubled neighborhood has seen crime almost vanish in the last six months with the police captain being heralded as a hero by the city council. However, when pressed, the locals live in fear of being stopped by the captain’s squad after so many nights of people being dragged off into squad cars and vanishing over night without a trace.
