Monstrous Monday: Wednesday Edition
I'm working on an adventure using Best Left Buried (Or hacking it?) based in the home setting my brother and I have played for years. The gist is an industrial fantasy setting based on the American West where a theocracy run by dragons has fallen into ruin and caused a schism in the country where disparate factions and city states want to remake it in their own image. You are Damned, people who are buried in debt meaning that they cannot enter heaven and their only way out is to plunder the riches of the golden age within the technomagical hellscape known as the Perdition. Inspired by STALKER, Hunt Showdown, and the Myth (And Death) of the American Dream. Also Late Stage Capitalism.
I've decided to begin by creating Bounty Targets; special monsters the Damned will be hunting in the Perdition. So first up, the Burrowing Railbird.
Burrowing Railbird
A terrestrial bird of prey the size of a large bear who makes its lair out of abandoned saloons and casinos using the remains to decorate its domain to attract mates. The more valuables and trophies collected from prey the more valuable its burrow to other Railbirds. Feathers black as pitch and covered in spirits taken from the cellars. Smells of smoke, whiskey, and cheap cigars. Chirps like a creaking chair and charges with a whooping wail. One massive set of talons and another smaller foot with more precise toes it uses to gather delicate items. Hobbles like a drunk but surprisingly quick.
Moods
1 - Scheming. 2 - Stalking. 3 - Resting. 4 - Feeding. 5 - Tinkering. 6 - Hunting.
Omens
1. Scattered coins of several denominations and feathers coated in stale perfume line the path forward.
2. A dead man pinned to a wall by an iron spike with his chest wound overflowing with poker chips.
3. Posed animals and humanoids gathered around a table held together by string. Frozen in strange poses with drinks poured and cards on the table for them.
4. Loud guttural whooping calls accompanied by flashing electric lights in the distance.
5. Pungent stench of sweat and high proof alcohol.
6. Splintered barrels and smashed bottles of fine liquor strewn haphazardly.

Sprinter, Rampage, Clumsy Movements, Weakness (Fire, Left Leg)
If set on fire gains Raging Inferno.
Raging Inferno: Entering a new Zone sets it Ablaze and attacks made against the Railbird are Against The Odds while it remains on fire.
Talon Rush.
Wind-Up: Focuses on a single character and assumes a loping stance about to pounce.
Action: The Railbird moves up to two Zones away towards the character and makes an Attack with the Upper Hand. If successful, the character is also Restrained by the Railbird.
Zone Conditions:
- Ablaze -
Chuffing smoke and walls of fire cause attacks and Wits check to be Against The Odds. Failed Wits checks (I.E. to Escape) cause the character to take 1 Vigour damage from the flames.
- Slick -
Wet surfaces or slippery ooze causes characters to take an additional Movement to get through this Zone. Checks to perform quick movements (I.E. dodging.) in the zone are Against The Odds.
Zone Prop('s):
- Whiskey Barrel (1 Use)
1. (Move) Roll the barrel at a nearby character which knocks them down and deals 1d3 Vigour damage if they fail a Wits check.
2. (Injury) Send a character crashing into the barrel causing an additional 1d3 Vigour damage and Stunning.
3. (Action) Spill the contents of the barrel in a nearby zone causing characters who move through it to become Slick.
- Open Bar (3 Uses) -
1. (Move) Smash a bottle to create an Improvised weapon that inflicts an Injury regardless of the damage rolled but breaks after making a successful attack.
2. (Injury) Rake a character over broken glass causing them to Bleed.
3. (Action) Light a bottle of liquor on fire and toss it at a nearby creature causing 1d6 Vigour damage and setting the Zone Ablaze.
